Producer Spotlight — Minor Figures Organic Oat M*lk

To celebrate the installation of our new oat m*lk machine (and Veganury) we are giving Minor Figures the producer spotlight treatment. As many customers will know, we have been stocking the brand's organic oat m*lk in tetra paks while we worked on making space for the machine. They have been very popular.

The oat m*lk machine enables customers to bring their own bottle. Please ensure it is clean and weigh it on the scales outside before filling. You can purchase the amount of oat m*lk you require as the bottle does not have to be filled completely. Please note the loose oat m*lk is NOT organic as this is not available yet, but we hope it will be soon.

We will continue to stock the tetra pak version for customers who prefer this option. Note; the tetra paks have a longer shelf life, and do not have to be kept in the fridge until opened.

What is their origin story?

Minor Figures started as a coffee company, and still do coffee. They were already into sustainability as one of the founders had also founded KeepCup. Then their Head Product guy went vegan. They had a choice to change to plant based products, or lose a valuable member of staff. They went plant based and the rest is history!

They are committed to reducing the harm done to the planet and finding ways to create a world safe to live in, supporting communities, restoring ecosystems and biodiversity.

Carbon Neutral

Minor Figures are a carbon neutral company. This means they reduce their emissions wherever they can. This is of course an ongoing process. For anything that can’t be eliminated (at the moment) they offset.

They estimate that Minor Figures customers have saved 21,919 tons of CO2e from entering the atmosphere since July 2018. That’s like driving to Mars in a regular car. Or driving to the moon and back some 230 times.

Oat m*lk uses around a tenth of the land and a bath full less of water per serving than regular dairy milk.

The oats are grown in Somerset and Northern Europe.

Offsetting projects

Offsetting involves investing in carbon positive projects. While there has been some controversy around this practice it can be done well and sustainably.

Minor Figures had a full assessment of their business carried out so they knew what impact they were having. This was translated into a company carbon footprint.

Social media helped decide which projects would be used to offset the 2020-2021 emissions.

These were:

  • Shade Grown Coffee Nicaragua

  • Bamboo Afforestation Project Nicaragua

  • Chinchiná River Forestry Project, Colombia

You can read more about these on their website.

B Corp

They became a certified B Corp in April 2022.

B Corp Certification is more than just a sustainability label. It’s also a movement, with the collective goal of transforming the global economy to benefit people, communities, and the planet (the ‘triple bottom line’)

What about the bags inside the machine?

Inside the oat m*lk machine is a bag to keep the m*lk fresh and hygienic. Minor Figures have calculated that the bagged Oat M*lk uses 42% less carbon emissions and 76% less packaging for the same volume of Oat M*lk than a TetraPak.

Also Get Loose will return these empty bags for recycling so they are not going to landfill, further reducing the carbon emissions!

The Enval recycling center is located 130km from London. The recycling bags go into the microwave oven at 600° C to be pyrolyzed into oil, gas and aluminium.

The gas created in the process is used to power the Enval plant. The oil can be used for fuel, and tests are under way to use it to make recycled plastics and adhesives. The aluminium comes out as aluminium flake and is 99% pure so this goes back into foil.

How much is the Oat M*lk?

The m*lk from the machine is £2.50 per litre.

The tetra paks are £1.80.
